Star Trek: Stargazer
Holographic Medical Assistant
The HMA was an early attempt by Dr. Louis Zimmerman to create a holographic medic. The HMA is intended to guide experienced med-techs in the performance of medium to low complexity treatments in lieu of or in addition to a full medical officer. The HMA has less than a half a million medical procedures on file and most of these are for humans. The HMA can perform procedures on its own, but its programming will defer to a more dexterous flesh & blood agent to do the actual work. The HMA is also not terribly stable. It is prone to failure and divergent behavior.
The HMA was installed on Stargazer just a few months before the Battle of Maxia. At the time, holographic technology was thought a mere toy, a holographic doctor was nearly absurd. Dr. Carter Greyhorse refused to allow the (few) holo-projectors to even be powered after initial install and testing. He feared the HMA would do more damage than good.
Admiral Cho felt that the medical ensigns assigned to Stargazer could use the HMA as a tutor and study aide. Between two ensigns and HMA, Cho felt the crew would get by and that the ensigns’ education would be advanced with real time experience.
Recent work by Surok has improved the HMA – improved to the point of having a wider database and better understanding of nervous systems. Surok was so successful, the HMA can now perform a Vulcan Nerve Pinch. Surok wrote a paper on his work and submitted it for publication.
